San Francisco Relocation Guide

If you’re relocating to San Francisco or within the city itself, you may find yourself at a loss as to how to take on the tasks to make this happen – or even what those tasks are. What are the homes for rent in San Francisco? How to evaluate San Francisco real estate rentals?

That’s why I’ve created this guide. Moving to the City by the Bay or even within its boundaries can sometimes feel intimidating. This is a big, complex place with many challenges – but also many rewards, which is why you’re moving here in the first place! Let’s look at some of the main things that will need to get done for you to have a successful move and then continue on to enjoy life here by the Bay.

First, you’ve got to do your homework. This involves researching the areas where you’re interested in living, focusing on the elements that mean the most to you. This could mean any combination of the following:

  • Public transit access and/or availability of parking
  • Average rents
  • School quality
  • Access to educational, cultural, and recreational amenities
  • Natural refuges such as parks
  • Availability of great restaurants, cafes, and nightlife

Then it’s time to make this move happen. That means making sure you’re in good financial shape to make the move – and to qualify for a great San Francisco rental property. A few steps toward doing just that:

  • Check your credit, disputing and correcting any errors
  • If you have time, try to improve your credit score by improving spending and payment habits
  • Gather your documentation, including pay stubs and bank statements

Now it’s time to go shopping for that perfect home. The timing of this will depend on the urgency of your move. However, provided you have a somewhat relaxed timeframe, I suggest you do the following:

  • Consider the cost of living in the City of by the Bay as compared to your income. Are you going to be struggling to live here or will paying the rent each month be manageable? Bay Area cost of living roughly includes:
    • An average rental price tag of nearly $3,700 for a one-bedroom apartment
    • Average utilities of slightly more than $100 for a 915-square-foot place
    • Cost of public transit, which varies depending on how often you use it. Monthly transit passes range from $73-$91 for adults.
    • Food – which, let’s face it, you need. While San Franciscans spend slightly less than the average on grocery shopping – about 11.5 percent of their budget, to be precise – that’s because people here like to eat in restaurants. Consider that as part of your budget as well.
